AMD K10 - DDR2 1066 instead of DDR3?
Intel will launch, on the 9th of May, the Bearlake chipset, with support for the “new and improved” DDR3 memory. AMD does not take the same path, instead, in the new AMD K10 core they will include support for DDR2 at 1066 MHz.
The new, K10 based AMD processors (Agena, Agena FX and Barcelona) will have integrated DDR2 controller, supporting PC-8500 DDR2. The new memory standard is actually not a standard yet, but AMD hopes that the new processors will have flawless support for them.
Bob Brewer, vice president at AMD, has confirmed that “we are expecting the native quad-core desktop processors to be launched in the second half of 2007, and these will contain an integrated DDR2-1066 memory controller, that will probably be compatible with the future JEDEC standards”.
Micron has already launched the new, 78 nm 1066 MHz memory chips, they are only waiting for the suitable processors that will support the new standard.
The situation will be interesting, though. One of the major players on the processor market thinks DDR3 is the future, the other: faster DDR2. Who is going to be the winner?
